The Book of Documents (Shūjīng, earlier Shu King) or Classic of History, also known as the Shangshu ("Esteemed Documents"), is one of the Five Classics of ancient Chinese literature. It is a collection of rhetorical prose attributed to figures of ancient China , and served as the foundation of Chinese political philosophy for over 2,000 years. Karlgren is the author of many studies on the history, philology, and art of ancient China. He employed linguistic methods to demonstrate the authenticity of the ancient Chinese literary monuments Tso Chuan and Chou Li. He has also done scholarly translations, with commentaries, of the ancient Chinese books Shih Ching and Shu Ching.
